Rohde & Schwarz actively supports the development and certification of 5G-based New Radio non-terrestrial networks (NR-NTN) with its comprehensive test solutions and a proactive strategy to prepare the commercial roll-out.
3GPP conformance testing is essential for ensuring that devices and networks comply with global standards in mobile telecommunications. For NR-NTN, the GCF (Global Certification Forum) and PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) have established WI-555 (Work Item) and RFT 555 (Request for Testing) in accordance with the 3GPP test specifications.
Rohde & Schwarz is already collaborating with Tier 1 chipset vendors, verifying successfully their respective platforms and the test cases outlined in WI-555 and RFT 555. The WI and RFT will include test cases for RF (Radio Frequency), RRM (Radio Resource Management), and PCT (Protocol Conformance Testing). The test cases are conducted on the R&S TS8980 Conformance Test Platform, R&S TS-RRM and R&S CMX500 from Rohde & Schwarz, preparing the system’s upcoming validation by GCF and PTCRB for NR-NTN in frequency range 1 (FR1). A successful validation will activate WI-555 and RFT 555 and kick off conformance testing for NR-NTN devices and consequently the commercialization of satellite-based 5G networks. Additionally, the user-friendly R&S CONTEST test system software platform facilitates the execution of 3GPP test cases seamlessly.
At the core of the test system is the CMX500 5G one-box signaling tester, which also supports early research and development through integrated fading and channel emulation, along with an intuitive tool for visualizing satellite constellations – all in a single-box test setup.
With this pro-active approach, Rohde & Schwarz contributes significantly to the adoption of 5G-based non-terrestrial networks during early stages of development, demonstrating itself as a reliable and trusted partner for the wireless ecosystem.
