Data security is at the heart of the new InterBase 15 release. With AES 256-bit encryption, FIPS 140-3 compliance, modernized tooling and new target platforms, the new release makes your apps and your data safer and more versatile. Here’s a closer look at the data security and other new and enhanced features in InterBase 15.

1. Enhanced Encryption and Data Security
The primary focus of InterBase 15 is on encryption and security: one of the most relevant features of the database got even stronger. We are doing this with a number of significant improvements.
OpenSSL 3.5 Long-Term Support (LTS) Version
InterBase has upgraded its security subsystem to utilize OpenSSL 3.5 LTS. Being an LTS version implies the library will be under development for a long time, with ongoing updates and support, providing fixes and enhancements over an extended period. By adopting the latest LTS version, InterBase establishes a solid, future-proof foundation.
AES 256-bit Encryption
In version 15, InterBase enhances data security by making the existing AES 256-bit encryption support the default and AES (with different strengths) as the only encryption method, eliminating the risk of accidentally using a less secure DES encryption option. This robust encryption is applied both to data at rest—securing database files—and to data in transit—protecting communication with the client library. By standardizing on AES, we ensure a higher level of security across all data handling.
Additionally, TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are no longer supported. Client-server communications now use TLS 1.2 and higher, ensuring stronger protection with modern security standards.
SHA-256 Password Digest
InterBase is also moving to a stronger password digest implementation, SHA-256, enhancing the integrity and security of stored passwords. SHA-256 determines how the password digest is sent over the wire and stored in the database.
Data Security: Support for FIPS 140-3
InterBase 15 Server offers support for the US Government approved FIPS 140-3 standard, developed by NIST for use in computer systems of non-military United States government agencies and contractors.
FIPS 140-3 support ensures compliance with specific government and industry security standards and is an optional InterBase feature you can enable. Even if your business doesn’t require FIPS compliance, it is great to know your database offers it.
2. InterBase Tooling Modernization
In addition to the work on encryption and data security, InterBase 15 updated its code to be built with Visual C++ 2022 (the current version of the development tool) so that it now depends on the current VC++ runtime.
InterBase 15 also includes the updates we introduced with InterBase 2020 Update 7 for our installer and its Java runtime dependencies, along with the included license manager.
3. New Target Platforms
This release of InterBase supports new versions of the target operating systems, including:
- Windows Server 2025
- RHEL 10
- Ubuntu 24
Notice that InterBase server can be installed in 64-bit versions of Windows and Linux servers, while the client library continues to support building applications that are either 64-bit or 32-bit, and continue supporting Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux, like the embedded InterBase ToGo versions do.
InterBase database files are portable across all supported platforms, and developers work against a common API interface across them, making it simple to develop once and deploy anywhere.
4. New Support and Maintenance Model
With InterBase 15 Server, the first year of Maintenance is now automatically included with your license purchase. InterBase 15 Server licenses remain perpetual, consistent with prior versions.
The Maintenance plan provides updates and upgrades to new versions for that license and can be renewed annually at a fraction of the cost of a new license. Customers who purchase an InterBase 15 Server Edition license are also entitled to three (3) support incidents per year.
